Dustin Smith
Seed Industry Consultant

Dustin has made his home in the seed industry.  Despite not growing up with an ag background, he found a passion for agriculture and became very involved in 4-H and FFA, earned bachelor's degrees in Ag Business and Agronomy, and has been in the seed industry for 15 years with a wide variety of experiences, including in ag retail, agronomic research, seed production, sales, product management, and even starting a first generation farm from scratch.

Most recently, Dustin spent two years with the North Dakota State Seed Department working in seed regulatory and seed certification.  With an extensive background in private industry, he understood the problems and frustrations that the seed producers, distributors and variety owners who would call into the department were facing.  When some personal changes required more schedule flexibility than the standard work schedule allowed, he needed to look for new opportunities.  He knew his experiences could be incredibly valuable for those who would rather focus on the needs of their operation than the bureaucracy of seed law and seed certification, and the idea for XSeed Consultants was born.

XSeed Consultants offers consulting and agent services for seed producers, seed distributors, seed conditioning facilities and variety owners/licensees.  Our business is broken down into four core services:

When you need to ensure your crop is legal to sell as seed and meets quality standards, our Common Seed & Quality Assurance programs take your crop through the entire process from field inspection through lab analysis and labeling, whether it's a self-directed QA program for your own internal quality control or an official QA program for marketing your crop to specific buyers.

We operate on your behalf and take care of everything that is required to turn your crop into a value added certified seed crop, or to sell certified seed.  All of the tests, forms, deadlines, and rules take time and energy away from your operation.  Rather than asking all of the "Who, What, Where, When and Why" questions while trying to figure it out yourself, we ask for the exact information and documentation necessary, in advance of any deadlines, and take care of the entire process for you, from field inspections to annual reporting.  We have Seed Certification Management services designed for both seed producers and ag retail.

Whether it's legal labels, records and sample retention, plant variety protection, interstate commerce, noxious weed seeds, whatever.  Our Regulatory Compliance services ensure that you remain in good standing with state and federal seed control officials regardless where your seed ends up.  Regulatory Compliance is a standard part of Common Seed and Seed Certification services, but as a standalone service, Regulatory Compliance services are designed for seed companies with distribution channels in many different states.

Our Variety Management services are primarily designed for variety owners and licensees of crops that are typically grown as a class of certified seed.  We work with your product management team and associates to ensure that the certification system never causes issues with your varieties or inventory management.  We also monitor common marketing channels for illegal sales.
